| Notes for M. was a project about psychological transformation; in art history, I found the subject most engagingly referred to in a series of book illuminations made for alchemical treatises of the Northern Renaissance, Splendor Solis. I decided to appropriate some of the elements for paintings that would respond to aspects of alchemy and the unfolding of layered processes. Alchemical images claim a certain consistency of development whereas my experience is more one of simultaneity and synchronicity. The images deal thus with different timeand space segments on one suggested image(carrier). Themes to respond to were the folds of becoming, a Deleuzian subject, the conjunction of gender images, the dark light, the conjunction of the inside and the outside. |
