Notes for M. was a project about psychological transformation; I found the subject most engagingly referred to in a series of book illuminations made for alchemical treatises of the Northern Renaissance, Splendor Solis. I decided to appropriate some of the pictorial elements for and within films that relate to some of the aspects given: the conjunction of gender images, the dark light, the conjunction of the inside and the outside.
Where my paintings for Notes for M. led me into crystallizing one space for the inclusion of different segments of a timeline, the medium of film seemed right to pursue the aspect of transformation within duration. The element of transformation led to mark making and drawing with and on the elements from Splendor Solis. All films are silent.
