Source images from ‘Splendor Solis’

September 17, 2014

In lots of my works I quote elements from a Renaissance alchemical series of book illuminations, Splendor Solis, painted at the end of the 1500s. The best online presentation is of the one kept at the British Library (from 1582), here is the link .

The picture on the left: Form Splendor Solis – an encounter of a man ascending from earth and a winged woman. Manuscript Cod. Germ. Fol. 42, Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin

Following the link below takes you to a PDF of a chapter that lines out my specific view on Splendor Solis, from my practice-based PhD thesis on the notion of ‘aura’ in art in a framework of Gilles Deleuze’s concept of ‘Becoming’.

The complete thesis can be downloaded from the ‘Texts’ section of the main menu.
